Portraits for Posterity
Urban Larsson's portraits are painted only from life through sittings. His north light studio on Prinseneiland, Amsterdam was purpose built for the painter G.H. Breitner in 1898.
Through his working methods Larsson is directly linked to the great portrait painters of the past and he also prepares his materials and paint using the time-tested techniques of previous centuries. As a contemporary painter working sight-size, whereby the sitter or motif is viewed and painted in scale and focus at a given distance, Larsson not only aims for unity of effect in his portraits, but also a sense of life in his paintings.
Since a few years Larsson also regularly teaches portraiture to the advanced students at Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy.
Urban Larsson regularly paints abroad and his commissions have come from England, Spain, France, Italy, Sweden, Denmark and the United States.
His portrait commissions are prestigious, for example, in 2002 he was commissioned to paint the official portrait of the former Dutch Prime Minister, Wim Kok. In 2012 he painted the President of the House of Representatives of the States General, The Netherlands, Mrs G. Verbeet. In recent years he has also, for example, portrayed the Honorable M. Barzun, Ambassador of the United States to the United Kingdom and Hans Croiset, actor, director, and writer whose portrait hangs in the Stadsschouwburg Theatre in Amsterdam. In 2013 he painted the official portrait of H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden for the Swedish National Gallery. His full-length life-size portraits of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands were completed in 2016 and commissioned by Sociëteit de Witte, The Hague.
Previous sitters have included; the President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Professor Dr. P. J. D. Drenth; the former Mayor of Wassenaar, Dr. P. H. Schoute; the Bishop of Haarlem, T. J. Horstman; the former Italian Ambassador to the Netherlands, the Hon. Count A. Pietromarchi; Willem F. C. Stevens (Baker & McKenzie) and Wim Meyer (Rabobank).
September 19th, 2012 Urban Larsson's Portrait of the President of the House of Representatives of the States General, The Netherlands, Mrs Gerdi Verbeet was inaugurated in The Hague, The Netherlands.
